Keep Calm and Use Adaptive Planning: Making Strategic Decisions During Uncertain Times

Allison Trimarco, Founder, Creative Capacity, LLC
Marc Uys, Executive Director, Princeton Symphony Orchestra

Most non-profits have a strategic plan…but how can you use that plan to react when your organization is facing uncertain conditions? This session will offer ideas for translating your traditional strategic plan into an adaptable map that allows you to respond to changing conditions and stay on track for success. We’ll explore adaptive planning tools that help inject strategic thinking into ongoing management decisions, such as identifying trigger events, planning for different scenarios, conducting trial experiments, and determining your key factors for success. Participants will leave with a set of tools they can use to guide their decision-making even when external conditions are changing rapidly.

Managing and Planning Crisis Communications in a 24/7 World

Irene Maslowski, Maslowski & Associates Public Relations

Today, non-profit and for-profit organizations face a greater exposure to the risk of crisis and potential harm, particularly with the onset of digital media, social media, and the 24-7 news cycle. While most non-profits plan and strategize on how to raise and increase their number of volunteers, many have not taken steps to plan for communicating in a crisis – or are not even aware of the risk – that can threaten their reputation, impact future funding along with the ability to carry out their mission. This session will focus on providing an understanding the importance of crisis communications, and the risk factors and the development of a proactive plan.

Creating a Positive and Collaborative Culture in a Fluctuating Work Environment

Marge Smith, Nonprofit Consultant; Chair, Community Works

Today’s workplace creates many challenges and requires adaptations byt also offers many opportunities. Options organizations can incorporate include telecommuting, shifting working hours, virtual spaces vs. face-to-face engagement, and providing other types of flexibility for employees and volunteers. Ideally, these options focus on ways to create an environment where individuals feel included, supportive and motivated to stay on track. This interactive workshop will include the opportunity for attendees to share ideas, experiences and tactics that have proven effective.

Managing As Mission: Getting to the World We Want Through Organizational Change

Lori Heninger, Owner & CEO, LRH Advisory Group

As a non-profit staffperson, manager or CEO, have you ever asked yourself the following questions:
‘If we want to change the world/nation/state/community, do we need to make change inside our non-profits?’
‘Does the way my non-profit gets to its mission reflect the mission?’
‘As a manager, is my work with my team and colleagues mirroring our organizational goals?’

This breakout session will provide information and an introduction to tools that can be used to expand the boundaries of what it means to be a non-profit manager, by making the case that managing as a reflection of the organizational mission—the cornerstone of any non-profit—can bring about the change non-profits were created to achieve: a better world for all. Through real-world examples, dialogue and participatory learning, we will explore ways to develop managing skills and organizational culture as a mirror of your non-profit’s mission.
