Vicky Hernandez, Ironbound Community CorporationThe Earned Income Tax Credit is one of the nation’s most effective anti-poverty programs, but nearly 1 in 5 eligible NJ residents never claim the state or federal EITC, leaving tens of millions of dollars on the table. Also, this tax year, millions of families with children who haven’t received their Child Tax Credit (CTC) will have an opportunity to claim their share. Changes to federal tax laws, an increase in scams and frauds, expanded eligibility requirements and delays in processing returns make it more more important than ever to spread the word about free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. Connecting low-income families to free quality tax preparation services is critical to preventing misinformation and ensuring that every eligible New Jersey taxpayer takes advantage of the state and federal EITCs and CTCs.
