Position Overview: As the Volunteer Services Manager, you will coordinate and oversee volunteer activities within Mercer Street Friends. Your responsibilities will include recruiting, scheduling, training, and recognizing volunteers. By effectively managing our volunteer program, you will contribute to the success of our organization and enhance our ability to serve the community.



  • Recruit, develop, and implement strategies for volunteers for specific roles/assignments through internal and external strategies.
  • Screen volunteer applicants and match prospective volunteers with available opportunities.
  • Collaborate on community partnerships.


  • Create and maintain volunteer schedules based on program needs.
  • Responsible for scheduling volunteers, tracking hours, planning for volunteer workload, conducting orientation, and coordinating with appropriate interdepartmental staff to ensure work is organized – to provide the volunteer experience is gratifying
  • Responsible for planning individual and corporate volunteer involvement with the organization and ensuring adequate coverage for events, programs, and ongoing projects.
  • Responsible for stewardship of corporate relationships around volunteering and additional activities.
  • Lead, assess, and collaborate with other Mercer Street Friends (MSF) impact centers to provide volunteers for both external and in-house opportunities.
  • Provide access and scheduling for partner agencies as needed.


  • Provide, organize, and lead new volunteers’ orientation process and training sessions.
  • Subject Matter Expert for the Volunteer Services function.

Recognition and Appreciation:

  • Express gratitude and acknowledge volunteers’ contributions regularly.
  • Recognize volunteers through informal means.
  • Conduct evaluations to improve the volunteer program.
  • Ensure positive volunteer experience.

Program Coordination:

  • Work closely with managers to align volunteer assignments with agency goals.
  • Communicate with impact centers and other agencies for volunteer needs.
  • Manage all requests related to volunteerism either by phone, email, mail or in person.
  • Monitor volunteer performance and address any issues promptly.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Develop a plan for volunteer involvement in the organization and consider a budget to support the plan.
  • Assess workload needs both daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. Create and manage plans to schedule volunteers most efficiently.
  • Maintain volunteer files to ensure background screening documentation.
  • Generate reports for the executive team.

Skills & Abilities:

  • High-level thought leader in managing volunteer services.
  • Capable of creating and executing program governance and action plans.
  • Ability to lead with courage, deal with ambiguity, effectively manage conflict, and collaborate with staff across departments.
  • Express enthusiasm & communication with the impact centers and community relationships.
  • Proficiency with case management software and/or Microsoft Office & MS Excel.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to safely lift 20-50 pounds, occasionally.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, social work, human resources) or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years of volunteer management or transferrable experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Passion for community service and a commitment to Mercer Street Friends’ mission.
Compensation: $65,000 - $70,000/annually
