Website Volunteer UP Legal Clinic

Volunteer UP Legal Clinic seeks to expand its scope of legal services by hiring a Staff
Attorney dedicated to assisting individuals with prior criminal justice involvement and
justice impacted families and communities in an effort to stabilize individuals and
families to prevent further negative ramifications of past criminal records. This staff
member will be the primary attorney and administrator working with community
organizations to provide reentry and other support services related to improving the
criminal justice system by reducing recidivism.
Primary job functions are:
-to take the lead on the Clinic’s significant expungement work, including
running several events per year and representing clients at court hearings;
-to advise, counsel, and represent clients seeking NJ driver’s license restoration,
including those in municipal court for low level offenses who are not eligible for the
services of a public defender;
-to advise, counsel, and represent clients with family court matters where there
is no right to counsel;
-to increase the scope of community education and outreach provided in the
region when access to an attorney would otherwise not be available; and
-to assist in recruiting and supporting pro bono attorneys.

Qualifications include a license in good standing to practice law in New Jersey and a
sincere interest in reentry work with experience or demonstrated commitment to social
justice and assisting persons from underserved communities. Candidates with
Municipal Court and/or Family Law experience will be given priority. Fluency in
Spanish is a plus but not required, as is familiarity with Salesforce.
The position is full-time and partly remote but requires in-person meetings with clients
and external stakeholders as well as court appearances. An ability to work
independently (with support) is essential. Salary range is $70,000 – $80,000 per year,
depending on experience.

Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000
