Website Volunteer UP Legal Clinic

Volunteer UP Legal Clinic seeks to expand its scope of legal services by hiring a Staff Attorney dedicated to assisting tenants facing eviction in an effort to stabilize individuals and families and to prevent further negative ramifications of facing homelessness. This staff member will be the primary legal liaison with court personnel in Vicinage XV, with the support of an experienced Eviction Diversion Attorney and Managing Attorney.

The primary job function of the Eviction Diversion Attorney will be to work with current Clinic attorneys to develop and implement a method for evaluation of the legal sufficiency of residential eviction complaints in Gloucester, Cumberland, and Salem Counties and provide direct representation of tenants facing eviction, with regular court appearances in Gloucester, Cumberland, and Salem Superior Court Special Civil Part.

The position is funded for twelve months by a grant from the State Department of Community Affairs Comprehensive Eviction Defense and Diversion (CEDD) program to keep renters stably housed by providing tenants facing housing displacement with no- cost housing support services, legal services, and financial support for rental assistance when deemed appropriate. Accordingly, the attorney will work closely with the vicinage’s Resource Navigator (caseworker) to recommend appropriate use of flexible funds to avoid eviction. The job description is not intended to describe, in detail, the multitude of tasks that may be assigned from time to time, but rather to give the candidate a general sense of the responsibilities and expectations of the position.

Qualifications include a license to practice law in New Jersey in good standing and a sincere interest in housing work with experience or demonstrated commitment to assisting persons from underserved communities. Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not required.

The position is partially work from home but will require in-person court appearances, meetings with clients and external stakeholders, and staff meetings. An ability to work independently (with support) is essential. Salary is $65,000 per year.

Compensation: $65,000
