May 25, 2021 marks the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. While some accountability has been acknowledged with the conviction of Derek Chauvin, this recent verdict does not negate the hundreds of years of unequal, racist, and often cruel systematic forces in our communities. We will take a moment of remembrance and reflection as part of this workshop as we work to correct the systemic issues that contributed to George Floyd’s murder.

Presenter: Linda Czipo, President & CEO, Center for Non-Profits
Cost:
Free – view here

The need for the programs and services provided by New Jersey’s non-profit organizations continues to rise, but non-profits are hampered in their ability to meet that need by continuously lagging funding and an uncertain resource environment, according to the New Jersey Non-Profits 2021: Trends and Outlook, the annual survey report released by the Center for Non-Profits.

This year’s report is particularly informative due to the inclusion of the status and outlook  impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Gain new insights about how non-profits are faring and the implications of these trends on the ability of organizations to provide needed programs and services. This information can aid in your non-profit’s planning efforts and your communications with funders, policy makers and the media.

The survey results strengthen and shape the Center’s advocacy and programmatic priorities, and will be shared broadly with the non-profit community, funders, government and business leaders, media and the public. These findings can also help you in your own planning and advocacy efforts.

Support for the 2021 New Jersey non-profit survey was provided by SobelCo and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

PSE&G’s Energy Saver program can help non-profit customers with 501(c)(3) or (c)(19) tax-exempt status make energy efficiency improvements that can save energy, cut costs, and reduce carbon emissions.

Empowering Our Communities: Voter Engagement Tactics for New Jersey Nonprofits

Presenters: Julian Johannesen, Nonprofit VOTE
Cost:
Free for Center members; $20 for nonmembers

On November 7, 2018 New Jersey voters elected a new governor as well all 120 members of the State legislature and numerous local races.  This year’s election is vitally important to New Jersey’s non-profits and the people and communities they serve.  Yet, too many people will hear very little about the November election and will receive little assistance or encouragement to vote. Community based organizations, service providers, and other 501(c)(3) non-profits will play a critical role this year in ensuring that their clients, consumers, and community members aren’t left out.

View this introduction to nonpartisan tactics New Jersey’s non-profits can use to help their constituents register to vote, learn about the process of voting, learn about the candidates and issues, and ultimately turn out to vote on Election Day. Trainers from Nonprofit VOTE will walk us through the basics of voter registration in New Jersey, voter education, Get Out the Vote, candidate engagement, and ballot measure advocacy.

How to Craft Communications That Get Results

Presenter: Jan Gallagher, Ph.D., Clear, Effective Communications
Cost:
Free for Center members – member exclusive

In conversation, we know people zone out if we drone on and on about ourselves. So how could we think that it’s OK for non-profit communications to drone on and on about… ourselves? Communications that focus on what the audience needs and wants to hear are far more effective than those that focus on what the non-profit wants to get across. If you communicate to your audience’s needs, you can bring in more donations, volunteers, program participants—everything you need to build and sustain your program now and into the future. This webinar will get you started on transforming your website, newsletters, appeals, and other communications from “us-centered” to “you-centered.”

Advocacy, Lobbying, and Non-Profits: Why it Matters and What Your Organization Can Do

Presenter: Linda Czipo, President & CEO, Center for Non-Profits
Cost:
Free for Center members; $20 nonmembers

Non-profit and voluntary organizations have been at the center of many of our nation’s most significant social policies. Influencing public policy can make the difference between a short-term, band-aid approach and long-term, systemic solutions to pressing social issues. Given today’s current, fast-paced policy climate, it’s imperative for organizations to be involved.

Unfortunately, despite the existence of laws and regulations specifically designed to encourage lobbying by charities, there is still a great deal of confusion about advocacy, lobbying, and what’s permissible for 501(c)(3) organizations. This webinar covers the role public policy engagement can play in a charity’s mission and some of the important federal and state advocacy and lobbying rules for charities.
